Yes, it is possible to categorize entries. Here are two tutorials, one for adding categories and another for adding entries:

• Adding a Category
• Adding an Entry

These would be a good place to start in learning how to use Connections.

You will not need any extension to add categories or entries. These features are built into Connections.

If you would like to have your users be able to filter by category, I would recommend the cMap template.
