I’ll apply when anything (plugin/theme) removes the custom roles/capabilities registered with WP. For some reason other plugins/themes will do this, likely simply a bug in their code as removing these can break things as you’ve seen. Connections is not alone in using custom roles/capabilities … many plugins use them such as estores and membership plugins. So they are not uncommon.
