You can of lost me going from category 13 to category 7, but, yes, if you exclude a category, that includes all its childrens categories too so entries in those excluded categories will not be found.

I think the only option would be to use CSS to hide the items in the drop down you do not wish to be displayed. The problem is that if you add new categories, you’ll have to update the CSS.

I helped another quite awhile ago do the same, I can’t remember the CSS selectors required to hide them but I do remember they were quite challenging to come up with.

If you can share a link to you directory page with the options you want hidden, I’ll see if I can come up with the CSS to hide them.
