That is correct, Connections does not use a CPT because it is more performant because the database structure for CTP is great for posts and post like content, but is not the best solution for directories. I know a couple other users custom coded integration with a mapping plugin (which one escapes me at the moment) by hooking into the action hooks provided by Connections. I know of but have no practical experience with MapPress but it is likely the same could be accomplished.
