Sorry, no there is not a way to open search results in a new tab/window. That said, there is a solution where no entries are shown until a search is performed. YOu can read the details in this QuickTip.

Another alternative is that the Widget Pack extension includes a search widget which can be placed in the theme’s sidebar. This would not open the search results in a new page/tab but it would enable you users to search the directory from any page.
