I forced the class to instantiate vCard just before the template as a test and this appears to work.
( this is of course a hack and is un desirable ).

I will work my way back and see why it is not instantiating correctly and report what I find.

I doubt anyone else will need this help as the version this website was using was so old…but you never know.
