Fudging the margins using CSS is the only way to do it without having to resort to editing the core PHP files of Connections. I think this will work. You might need the to add the !important flags.

#cn-slim-plus .cn-alphaindex {
    margin-top: -100px;
    margin-bottom: 60px;
    text-align: left !important;
}

#cn-slim-plus .chosen-container-single {
    margin-top: 30px;
}
