My initial guess is that PHP is running out of the memory allocated to it. Take a look at this excellent blog post on how to increase the memory allocation.

I suggest a value of 128M. The post gives several different methods, which method that will work will depend on your webhost. I suggest starting at the top of the list and work your way down.
