Yes, Connections with Link requires WP user accounts to function and to provide user authentication. Sorry, but I do not have any plan on implementing a separate authentication method.

With that said, there is no way to provide each family their own unique login credentials. The only other option would be to password protect the page where the [connections] shortcode is added. Doing this would give everyone a common password to view the page and would not provide way for families to edit their own entries.
