If changing themes solve the issue, then the theme is very likely causing a fatal JavaScript error which is stopping JavaScript from running. Depending on when this error occurs, it could be causing other background scripts from functioning too, not just Connections or its templates.

Can you share a link to your directory page so I can take a closer look?
