Yes, you can use Connections on the front page, many users setup their directory like that. Your permalink link would like this though…

Permalink to specific entry:
http://healthresourcedirectory.com/name/alternative-treatment-international/

Permalink to a specific category of entries:
http://healthresourcedirectory.com/cat/addiction-and-recovery/

The root bases slugs in the URL like name and cat are required otherwise they would conflict with the core WordPress permalink structure/logic. These can be customized on the Connections : Settings admin page under the Advanced tab.
