You don’t really need it to see if it’ll work for you. Functionally it is exactly the same as the search above the result list in Tile Plus. It is just the placement that differs. It even has the same visual style. If you have the widget, you would see the widget in the sidebar as well atop of the Tile Plus results list. So, I would actually recommend disabling the search on the template.
If you want a feel for how it’ll work. I recommend creating a “Results” page and setting it as the directory home page. You would need to do this anyway for the search widget because ideally you wouldn’t want to use a shortcode that would limit results more than the key words entered by the user. So, on the “Results” page you would simply have [connections]. [Tip, you could use a template other than Tile Plus on this page since the search widget works with all templates.] With Tile Plus active, enter you search keywords.
Using the widget will be exactly the same, but since it is in the theme’s sidebar a user could search from any page in your site, land on the “Results” page with the list filtered by the keywords they entered.
