Thanks for your prompt and thoughtful feedback.

I’d like people to be able to submit and maintain their entry from the front end, although doing it in the admin area would be acceptable. We need to create a new WP user for each member since (after I get this going) I want to require login in order to see the directory of members.

My site may potentially grow to have thousands of members in the free member directory. At this point, I’m not sure how this will all work. It has to be automated, so people can submit their information and get listed as a member (I don’t need to review their submission), and ideally be able to edit or add to their profile page.

I want to make it easy for site visitors, and a minimum of work for me.

I will try finding and setting up the system with a user registration plugin. If I set the Roles properly will this allow new users to create and edit their directory listing?

Another related question: is there a way for the biography or notes sections to allow images or media? It seems that the field editor only allows basic rich text formatting.
