I ended up not using connections because I do not want to have to commit some future maintainer of this website to using licensed software – and it appears (??) that search is only available with the premium versions.

A key issue here is that I volunteered to fix an older site that did use a licensed product (divi) and ran into trouble when they did not want to keep renewing that license to keep up with upgrades in WP and other plugins.

It’s unfortunate because connections is better than the alternatives I found – except for the lack of search.
