You can setup Connections and it’ll work. Many users use Connections in exactly this way. It is just a little more complex of a setup. Design wise Connections is focused on a single page usage, which is how most use it. So, certain things like the view link on the Manage admin page will only ever resolve to the page set os the directory home page because, like I mentioned, it is not possible for Connections to know which entry belongs to which page when manually separated.
