You really should not have directly edited the database. If the directory entries had an email address that matched exactly the WP User (assuming these are your authors and they are the actual authors of the posts as far as WP is concerned). The only thing that needed to happen was to have your authors log out and log back in so the entry and user would be linked. Authored would have just worked.
With the direct edits to the db, I’m unsure what the exactly solution would be. I would suggest having your authors log out and back in. That may be enough to correct the issue.
You can see which directory entry is linked to which WP user on the Connections : Manage admin page. It will be displayed on the far right of the table row. If there is no indication, then that entry is not linked to a user.
