That is odd. Perhaps the server didn’t like the compression algorithm used in the original JPEG. Any way, at least its working!

Yep, that will work just fine. You can also use the same API key from your theme for the Connections Browser API key (I’m assuming the key setup for the theme is also a URL restricted key). Having them separate does all for tracking usage individually.
