If you’re using a template that has a category drop down, you can use a beta, undocumented feature/shortcode option:

[connections enable_category_multi_select='true']

The only problem, there’s no submit button for the user to click after they select their chosen categories. The user could click the search button and that would work, but it is not really obvious that they should. If you can make a minor PHP edit and tell me which template you’re using, I can give you the code snippet you would need to add the submit button.
