@ John
Sorry, But I don’t think I understand what you’re asking … those image dimensions are the default image sizes for Connections. Connections will scale and/or crop the images to those sizes based on the ratio setting on the Connections : Settings admin page.
Now with that said, templates such as Excerpt /Plus and Slim /Plus will dynamically scale/crop images to fit the required image size for the template. Templates like cMap and Market use the logo and the logo image size by default but that can be set at the shortcode to use the photo image at any size you define. The defined size could be anything, the image would be cropped/scaled dynamically to the defined size.
If I haven’t confused the issue, sorry if I did, it’s because I don’t quite understand … but general guidelines…
The image size you upload needs not be any larger than the largest image size you plan on using.
The image should be center weighted … meaning the focus object of the image should be in the center of the image because all the scaling and cropping will be based on the center.
Most cases 96dpi is sufficient, but if the over all pixel dimension are not in the mega-pixels uploading higher dpi images is fine.
I hope I answered your question or at least came close to answering it and it helps.
