Well Connections like just about every other plugin has not inbuilt way of removing itself so it must be something external. What other plugins are installed and active? There is one plugin that scans for TimThumb which Connections does use. But it incorrectly identifies it as using the old insecure version, which Connections never used, and deletes the plugin in its attempt to update TimThumb.
