Given this a bit more thought…
Use this link for your directory page:
Change the value for
cn-near-coordto be the coordinates of your clients business. change the value for
cn-radiusto be the radius that all businesses are located within.
Edit the page with the
[connections]shortcode. Add the
order_byoption setting its value to
distance. So the shortcode should be something like “[connections order_by="distance"]`. Save the page.
Now, the entries should be listed in order of distance from your clients place of business.
Give it a try and let me know how it goes.11/15/2018 at 1:35 pm #477126
That sounds amazing, and I will try it shortly. That doesn’t give visitors an idea of the distance unless we do a text box though, right? Easily done of course. Just clarifying.
If I order by distance, can I then add the alpha index to the top of each page?
Thank you SO much.11/15/2018 at 3:01 pm #477129

Sorry, no, the character index only works when the default sorting is used.11/15/2018 at 3:30 pm #477140
Hmmm. Struggling to get the permalink changed. I added a custom permalinks plugin but it’s stripping out some characters and adding % instead. Thoughts?11/15/2018 at 3:57 pm #477145
What do you mean by custom permalinks?11/15/2018 at 5:07 pm #477151
Don’t I need to change the permalink to match the url you gave me? If not, where do I put it?
Sorry…this is new.11/15/2018 at 7:23 pm #477164
No, that link I gave you is a sample link. change the values as described earlier and use that link to add to the site’s nav as a Custom Link on the WP Menus admin page. YOu would add that custom link instead of using the “standard” page link.
Does that make sense?11/28/2018 at 5:16 pm #478145
Okay. I’m an idiot. I didn’t have a moment to respond and tell you sooner. I just put the link in as you suggested. It is not changing the sort order by distance using the link.
The sort is alphabetical. I have this for the shortcode:
[connections allow_public_override='TRUE' str_home_addr="Address" category=12]
Thank you again for sticking with me through all of this!11/29/2018 at 8:39 am #478169
RE: The sort is alphabetical. I have this for the shortcode:
This is because the order_by shortcode option has not been set to distance as explained in an earlier response.
Your shortcode should be:
[connections allow_public_override='TRUE' str_home_addr="Address" category=12 order_by="distance"]
Hope this helps!11/29/2018 at 10:16 am #478181
Heh. Told you I’m an idiot!
That worked. Thank you so much. I’m still waiting for the client to decide about the text box option, so I may still bug you. But THANK YOU so much!
